The Norwegian folktronica foursome Flunk was formed out of the studio jam sessions of a trio of Oslo musicians: producer Ulf Nygaard (also of Folk and Rovere), guitarist Jo Bakke (formerly with the Happy Campers), and drummer Erik Ruud (a member of the Guidance-label act Antenna). After adding vocalist Anja Oyen Vister, Flunk recorded their debut album, For Sleepyheads Only, and released the record through Guidance. Profile:	Born 1948 in Kingston, Jamacia. In late 1967, Junior formed a vocal group named The Versatiles. They cut their first session for release on Joel Gibson's Amalgamated label. Three superb titles ("Just Can't Win," "The Time Has Come" and "Trust The Book" were recorded under the supervision of Lee Perry with musical backup from Lynn Taitt & the Jets. Between 1968 and 1974, Perry and Junior collaborated in the production of over forth titles, including all time classics like "Curly Locks," "Rasta No Pickpocket," "Place Called Africa," "Beat Down Babylon," "King Of Babylon," "Cutting Razor" and "Long Way." By the mid-seventies, Junior was a major star in Jamaica poised for international exposure. However he was also acquiring a reputation for madness. By 1976, Junior Byles was confined to the mental ward at Belview Hospital in Kingston. Throughout the later part of the decade, Junior was in and out of the hospital sanitarium and in this period he managed to make many great records for a variety of producers. There was "Chant Down Babylon" and "Pitchy Patchy" for the JaMan label, a remake of "King Of Babylon" for Niney and Lloyd Campbell, "False Leader" for Micron, and the classic "Fade Away" for Channel One. Two albums were released, the first from Perry material on Dynamic/Trojan and the second co-produced by Perry and Pete Weston and Micron.

Junior Byles bio:

One of Jamaica's most tragic figures, Junior Byles was also one of the island's greatest root stars. His vocals were quite unique, and although his soft, almost husky voice would never ring from the rafters nor give voice to anger, the gentle timbre still expressed deep emotions. His was the voice of the meek and was all the stronger for it. The closest comparison is perhaps with the vulnerable tones of Slim Smith, but while the former Unique made his mark with love songs, Byles would speak not for the lovelorn, but for the oppressed. The two men did share another link, however, both suffered from serious psychological problems that in one case ended one man's career and left the other in ruins. Kerrie "Junior" Byles was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1948. He was still in his teens when he formed the Versatiles with fellow vocalists Earl Dudley and Louis Davis. It was the height of the rocksteady era and vocal trios ruled the land. The Versatiles were just one of many hopefuls at the auditions for the Festival Song Contest in 1967, each desperate to catch the eye of the producers who stalked the contest in search of new talent. The trio was proud of their entry, an upbeat Byles' composed celebration of unity, "The Time Has Come." The infectious song and the trio's obvious enthusiasm caught the attention of Joe Gibbs, who brought the group into the studio. At the time, Lee Perry was working as Gibb's chief engineer, and thus oversaw the Versatiles' first recordings, including their festival entry. Perry left in a huff over production credits soon after, and his assistant, the young Niney Holness, took over. The trio continued to cut singles exclusively for Gibbs over the next two years, but not in the prolific numbers of many of their bigger counterparts. But quality made up for quantity; gorgeous songs like "Just Can't Win," driving religious numbers such as "Trust the Book," and the party piece call and response of "Long Long Time" all cemented their reputation. The group also excelled at writing catchy hooks, as they proved with their debut single and confirmed with "Push It In," one of the most infectious and rudest songs in their repertoire. The Versatiles rode the rocksteady wave into the new reggae era, and as the decade waned, they left Gibbs and linked again with Perry. They cut a handful of singles for him, including such hits as "Children Get Ready" and the harmony drenched "Teardrops Falling." From there, they joined forces with Duke Reid, for whom they recorded the delicate "I Love You Baby." The trio also had a brief encounter with Laurel Aitken before reuniting with both Gibbs and then Perry. The session with Perry was to be their last, and the bandmembers went their separate ways in 1970. Byles joined the Jonestown's fire department, but continued working with Perry. Before the year was out, the pair had cut his debut solo single, "What's the World Coming To," which was given the full orchestral treatment by Tony Hartley in London.

In a way, Byles served the same function for the producer as Max Romeo did for Holness, giving voice to Perry's most radical roots visions. The pair attempted to subvert the 1971 Song Festival with their entry "Rub Up Festival '71," which actually reached one of the final heats. It was only when Jamaican radio complained about the innuendo-laced lyrics that the judges took notice and disqualified the song. The pair got their own back the following year, when they took the less-objectionable "Festival Da Da" to second place in the contest. 1972 was a momentous year in Jamaica's history, an election was scheduled, where for the first time the leftwing opposition People's National Party (PNP) (headed by Michael Manley) looked likely to take control. It was a heady, if difficult, time and many of the island's artists were making their political preferences known, Byles and Perry included. The pair recorded a number of seminal songs across late 1971 and into 1972, all of which spoke directly to the current political clime. The haunting "A Place Called Africa," is one of the loveliest repatriation songs ever recorded; the biting "Pharaoh Hiding," a nursery rhyme taunt aimed at the ruling Jamaican Labour Party's (JLP) leader Hugh Shearer; "Joshua's Desire," putting Manley's vision of a better world into song (his supporters referred to him as Joshua); and the most radical of all, "Beat Down Babylon," a perfect blend of Byles' infectious melody and Perry's production effects, including a cracking whip sound to accompany the chorus' "whip them, whip them Lord." However, in the hothouse of Jamaican politics, the population occasionally wants a breath of fresh air, and it blew in with Byles' "Fever," his biggest hit of the year, and one of Perry's most masterful productions. 1973 brought Byles' debut album, Beat Down Babylon, a dread masterpiece and instant classic. The album remains one the best from the era, notable not just for Byles excellent songwriting and delivery, but for Perry's exceptional production, and it stands to this day as his most coherent album. Byles followed through with a stream of equally powerful singles. His best work was with Perry (although the singer would also record with other producers on occasion), and the pair fired single after single onto the charts, while across the Atlantic, their songs were stirring the attention of British listeners as well. One of the best was "When Will Better Come," an anthemic reminder to Manley that Jamaica was still waiting for him to deliver on the better times he'd promised. There were lighter hearted moments as well, like "Fun and Games," the nursery rhyme of a counting game cum religious instruction of "Auntie Lulu," and the apocalyptic sounding meeting with a comely girl on "Pretty Fe True." The seminal "Curley Locks arrived in 1974, a song that arguably best illustrates Byles' shimmering talent. Addressed by a young rasta to a girl with a very disapproving father, the singer delivers the lyrics with the perfect touch of plaintiveness, whilst never descending into pitifulness. He may love her, but he won't sacrifice his beliefs for her and although that remains unstated, that touch of fatalistic strength is the core of the song: If she walks away, so be it, adding even more poignancy to the song. Perry's muted arrangement and production adds heavily to the evocative mood. The producer was renowned for riding roughshod over his artists, and he often sacrificed both the song and the singer for the sake of his production. But Byles consistently brought out his best, and all of Perry's work with the singer is notable for its more muted, yet still creative style. His sympathy for the singer's compositions is evident. "Curly Locks" cemented Byles' reputation in Britain, and just added to his chart success in Jamaica.

But behind the scenes, all was not well. Perry was as well-known for his volatility as his creativity and was quick to take offense. Byles was the opposite extreme, renowned for his moodiness, and he alarmingly started falling into paroxysms of deep depression. By 1975, the relationship between the two men had sundered. One of their last sessions together resulted in the "Long Way" single. Although ostensibly a moody love song, with hindsight its lyrics accurately sum up the singer and producer's path together. Byles now moved to the Ja-Man label, run by Dudley Swaby and Leroy Hollett, and immediately knocked out three hits for the team in duet with Rupert Reid -- "Chant Down Babylon," "Know Where You're Going," and "Remember Me," and a fourth, "Pitchy Patchy," solo. It was obvious that regardless of his emotional problems, the singer was more than capable of continuing to cut excellent material. This was affirmed by further successful singles with Lloyd Campbell ("Buy-O-Boy") and Pete Weston. The latter producer oversaw Byles second album, Jordan, which boasted the pair's two big hits, a splendid cover of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and a spectacular version of "Oh Carolina," amongst other covers and new material, and was almost the equal of Beat Down Babylon. However, virtually everything Byles released that year was to be overwhelmed by the single "Fade Away." Produced by JoJo Hookims, this powerful dread single was a smash not just in Jamaica, but in the Britain as well, where it hit with the strength of a nuclear blast. The singer seemed unstoppable. He was one of Jamaica's biggest stars and had also established a massive following in Britain, an international breakthrough now seemed imminent.

But then, on August 27, 1975, Haile Selassie died. Obviously, all devoted Rastafarians were deeply affected by his death, but Byles, already emotionally fragile, couldn't cope. He attempted suicide, but thankfully didn't succeed and he was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He was released soon after, but wasn't really recovered. Over the next few years, Byles continued to attempt to work, but proved to be able to for only brief periods of time. Having poured singles down on the island like rain, the singer's output slowed down to a few releases a year. He managed to cut only a couple of tracks in 1976, overseen by Holness, a cover of Delroy Wilson's classic "Run Run" and a new version of "King of Babylon." The following year, he rejoined Lloyd Campbell and recorded "Can You Feel It" and "Weeping," a song whose lyrics reflected Byles' own emotional state. The singer also linked with DJ Big Youth for a version of the Archies' "Sugar Sugar (utilizing the rhythm from the Mighty Diamonds' "Right Time"). In 1978, he reunited with his first producer, Joe Gibbs, now working in conjunction with Errol Thompson as the Mighty Two, and cut another pair of singles -- "Dreadlocks Time" and "Heart and Soul." Every single one of these songs was masterful and each was a hit, but that didn't change the fact that the singer's life was in shambles and his career equally so. In between these sparse recording sessions, Byles retired to the quiet of the hills or back into the hospital. The sessions with the Mighty Two were to be the last for four years, and the singer disappeared entirely from the music scene. In 1982, Byles returned determined to relaunch his career. He began recording a new album with producer Black Morwell for Bullwackies, it would not be ready for release until 1986. In the interim, the singer's life took further turns for the worse. He and his mother were close, and he was devastated by her death during this period. They say tragedies strike in threes, and this was followed by the loss of his house in a fire; adding to his misery, his wife and two children left Jamaica and emigrated to the U.S. During this sad time, Morwell released two new Byles' singles, "Better Be Careful and "Don't Be Surprised," while the singer also cut "Dance Hall" for Winston Riley. Finally, his new album was released, but after the sheer brilliance of his last two, Rasta No Pickpocket was a disappointment. The title-track was a re-recording of an old single cut back in his days with Perry, and while there were still flashes of genius within, the overwhelming aura of the album is one of talent slipping away. Horrifically, by late 1987, the singer was homeless, penniless, and virtually unrecognizable.

Two years later, Holness took Byles back into the studio and recorded a new single, the superb "Young Girl." In 1992, the pair reunited again and cut the equally good "Little Fleego." After each release, the singer again faded into oblivion. Five years later, Byles took the stage with guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith for a small number of Jamaican shows over 1997 and 1998. Since then, Byles has slipped from view once again. Even with these vast gaps between releases, Byles has not been forgotten, something the burgeoning reissue market has expertly seen to. The singer, both on his own and with the Versatiles, appears on numerous various artists and producer compilations, while the Trojan label has ensured that much of his work with Perry remains available. Talent is known to run in some families and seems to all but flash flood in others. The members of the group 3T are a perfect case in point. Sons of Tito Jackson and the late Delores Martes, talented brothers Tariano Adaryll "Taj," Taryll Adren, and Tito Joseph "TJ" call the extraordinary Michael Jackson uncle and famed singer Janet Jackson aunt. The three young Jacksons studied and performed together for years, perfecting their vocal style and learning by watching. The group started out under the name Three T's, but later shortened it to simply 3T. In 1992, the handsome threesome got the chance to write musical numbers for a television series about some members of their famous family, The Jacksons: An American Dream. 3T also worked on soundtracks for the movies Free Willy and Free Willy 2.

In 1995, 3T released its debut album, Brotherhood, under the Sony Records label. "Sexual Attention," "Memories," and "Words Without Meaning" are some of the soulful numbers on the group's first full-length effort. Over the next five years, there were a number of singles, like "I Need You," "Gotta Be You," "Tease Me," and "Anything." He launched his online carrier at MP3.com, where he consistently dominated the Reggae charts for years in a row. He is now widely considered to be a pioneer in online DUB and the popularization of creating DUB music with computers. He produces his music in his studio The Dubroom. Today, Messian Dread still releases much of his music on the Internet. The music of his art is Roots. Roots Reggae with the emphasis on Dub. Most tracks he makes are Dubs. Where other modern Dub Artists choose ultra modern breakbeat rhythms, or cross the lines of reggae in another way, Messian tries to keep his music well within these borders. His ideal is to simulate the situation of the studios in which reggae originated and to produce his music according to the same principals. To say he never experiments is another extreme, but the central point in his music remains to be the combination of his roots basslines and authentic reggae drums. Messian Dread's main inspiration lies within the works of the Dub Masters, like Scientist, Prince Jammy, King Tubby, Paul Groucho Smykle, and Philip Smart. 'They remain to be the masters for I,' he says. Although Messian Dread has such clear examples, his music is in no way a copy of their work. 'Because I also play most of my music myself, and I sing on my own tracks, this is a difference with the Original Dub Masters.' Consciousness is another strong foundation in the music of Messian Dread. You will not find slackness (that is: more or less pornographic) in his tracks. Within reggae, the word 'consciousness' stands for positive lyrics with a spiritual or social message. Messian's music is just that. Being a 'Jesus Dread', or (as some call it) 'Rasta of the Christ Doctrine', like his example Yabby You, is the main reason for Messian Dread to make music. And to write. He has written a number of books, countless reviews and numerous articles on a wide variety of subjects. Messian Dread's writings go hand-in-hand with his musical releases, and when you have the time to check them, they will give the musical experience a deeper dimension for sure. No other electronic dance act made so many recordings in such a wide range of styles (and with such impressive results) as the duo of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton. After coming together in 1991, the pair began recording music whose range spanned all of electronic dance music, though many were recorded under aliases -- industrial techno as Reload, electro-funk as Jedi Knights, progressive house as Link, jungle as the Chameleon, and most famously, ambient and house as Global Communication. Their 1994 LP 76:14, recorded as Global Communication, was a notable high point of the early-'90s ambient house movement.

The partnership began in 1991, when Pritchard and Middleton formed Evolution Records (named after a Carl Craig track) to release their own dancefloor-oriented house and techno. (Middleton had previously recorded with Aphex Twin while Pritchard had been half of the duo Shaft, responsible for the British Top Ten rave hit "Roobarb & Custard"). The first three releases on Evolution were EPs recorded as Reload by Pritchard/Middleton in 1992-1993 -- The Reload, The Autoreload, and The Biosphere. The records were excellent Detroit-inspired tracks, brooding and eerie but nonetheless highly danceable. Reload first gained fame on the Infonet label (the brief dance subsidiary launched by Creation Records) with an EP and the 1994 full-length A Collection of Short Stories. Global Communication, which matched the unsettling ambience of Reload but with a focus on warmer rhythms, debuted on Evolution 004, otherwise known as The Keongaku EP. Though Global Communication's full-length debut Pentamerous Metamorphosis followed soon after, it wasn't quite a proper album per se; it was in fact an extended remix of Chapterhouse's Blood Music LP.

With the ambient house boom in full force by 1994, Pritchard and Middleton's downtempo project became more important than Reload. They signed to Dedicated and released 76:14 in mid-1994. The album later gained an American release, and made many critics' best-of lists that year. Global Communication released Remotion in late 1995, though this album consisted of remixes also, including material from the out of print Pentamerous Metamorphosis LP along with reworkings of material by Jon Anderson, Nav Katze, and Warp 69.

Never a team to rest on their laurels, Pritchard and Middleton added another side project to their resum� in late 1994 when Jedi Knights released the debut single for nu-school electro label Clear Records. Though a full-length was more than a year in coming -- New School Science appeared in March 1996 -- the debut 12" sparked an electro revival in England, and anticipated later Clear moonlightings by �-Ziq (as Tusken Raiders), Matt Herbert (as Doctor Rockit), and Autechre (as Gescom). Jedi Knights also appeared on the May 1995 label retrospective The Theory of Evolution along with other Evolution projects such as Reload, Link & e621, and non-Pritchard/Middleton artists such as Jak & Stepper (aka Dave Kempston and Stevie Horn) and Matt Herbert's Wish Mountain project.

Evolution was soon replaced by Pritchard and Middleton's new label venture: Universal Language Productions, the home of new releases by Gerd, Max 404, Danny Breaks, and Droppin' Science, among others. The duo also debuted yet another project in early 1996 -- the Chameleon had first appeared in 1994 remixing Link's "Archetype Arcadian," and as jungle began to grow in popularity during 1995-1996, LTJ Bukem signed the Chameleon to his Good Looking stable for the single "Links." It appeared in January 1996, and was compiled later that year on Bukem's Logical Progression compilation.

Perhaps fearful of spreading themselves too thin, Pritchard and Middleton cut back on their side-project work by early 1997; though no LPs were forthcoming, the pair did issue two new Global Communication singles ("The Way/The Deep," "The Groove") signaling a new direction toward the lush sounds of dancefloor-friendly deep house and funk. Middleton also stepped out on his own with A Jedi's Night Out, an entry in Mixmag's series of DJ albums. By the end of the decade, both were working on solo projects (Middleton's Cosmos project produced a big Ibizan club hit during 2000 with "Summer in Space"), though they promised they'd work together again. Singer Nita Whitaker grew up in Shreveport, LA, the youngest of four children. Her father, Green Whitaker, was a singer with the Spiritual Jubilee vocal group. In her youth, she formed a gospel group with her two sisters, the Whitaker Sisters. She studied classical voice while attending Northeast Louisiana University, from which she graduated with a B.S. degree in nursing. She won the title of Miss Louisiana in 1984. Moving to Los Angeles, where she married session singer Don LaFontaine and became the mother of two daughters, she won for 13 consecutive weeks on the Star Search TV amateur contest, making her one of the show's grand champions. She was a member of the vocal group Next Millennium, which got as far as an Atlantic Records contract and an unreleased album before breaking up. Her performance on the demonstration recording of "I, Who Have Nothing" for Whitney Houston led to a brief appearance in the 1992 film The Bodyguard. She made other minor film and television appearances while enjoying more prominent roles in stage musicals such as touring companies of Sweeney Todd and Ragtime, as well as a Broadway-bound show based on the songs of Gamble and Huff, Me and Mrs. Jones, in which she starred as Mrs. Jones, that premiered in Philadelphia in 2001. 2Pac became the unlikely martyr of gangsta rap, and a tragic symbol of the toll its lifestyle exacted on urban black America. At the outset of his career, it didn't appear that he would emerge as one of the definitive rappers of the '90s -- he started out as a second-string rapper and dancer for Digital Underground, joining only after they had already landed their biggest hit. But in 1992, he delivered an acclaimed debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, and quickly followed with a star-making performance in the urban drama Juice. Over the course of one year, his profile rose substantially, based as much on his run-ins with the law as his music. By 1994, 2Pac rivaled Snoop Dogg as the most controversial figure in rap, spending as much time in prison as he did in the recording studio. His burgeoning outlaw mythology helped his 1995 album Me Against the World enter the charts at number one, and it also opened him up to charges of exploitation. Yet, as the single "Dear Mama" illustrated, he was capable of sensitivity as well as violence. Signing with Death Row Records in late 1995, 2Pac released the double-album All Eyez on Me in the spring of 1996, and the record, as well as its hit single "California Love," confirmed his superstar status. Unfortunately, the gangsta lifestyle he captured in his music soon overtook his own life. While his celebrity was at its peak, he publicly fought with his rival, the Notorious B.I.G., and there were tensions brewing at Death Row. Even with such conflicts, however, 2Pac's drive-by shooting in September 1996 came as an unexpected shock. On September 13, six days after the shooting, 2Pac passed away, leaving behind a legacy that was based as much on his lifestyle as it was his music.

The son of two Black Panther members, Tupac Amaru Shakur was born in New York City. His parents had separated before he was born, and his mother moved him and his sister around the country for much of their childhood. Frequently, the family was at the poverty level, but Shakur managed to gain acceptance to the prestigious Baltimore School of the Arts as a teenager. While he was at the school, his creative side flourished, as he began writing raps and acting. Before he could graduate, his family moved to Marin City, CA, when he was 17 years old. Over the next few years, he lived on the streets and began hustling. Eventually, he met Shock-G, the leader of Digital Underground. The Oakland-based crew decided to hire him as a dancer and roadie, and as he toured with the group, he worked on his own material. 2Pac made his first recorded appearance on the group's spring 1991 record, This Is an EP Release, and he also appeared on their second album, Sons of the P. The following year, he released his own debut, 2Pacalypse Now. The album became a word-of-mouth hit, as "Brenda's Got a Baby" reached the R&B Top 30 and the record went gold. However, its blunt and explicit lyrics earned criticisms for moral watchdogs, and Vice President Dan Quayle attacked the album while he was campaigning for re-election that year.

Shakur's profile was raised considerably by his acclaimed role in the Ernest Dickerson film Juice, which led to a lead role in John Singleton's Poetic Justice the following year. By the time the film hit theaters, 2Pac had released his second album, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., which became a platinum album, peaking at number four on the R&B charts and launching the Top Ten R&B hit singles "I Get Around" and "Keep Ya Head Up," which peaked at number 11 and 12, respectively, on the pop charts. Late in 1993, he acted in the basketball movie Above the Rim. Although Shakur was selling records and earning praise for his music and acting, he began having serious altercations with the law; prior to becoming a recording artist, he had no police record. He was arrested in 1992 after he was involved in a fight that culminated with a stray bullet killing a six-year-old bystander; the charges were later dismissed. 2Pac was filming Menace II Society in the summer of 1993 when he assaulted director Allen Hughes; he was sentenced to 15 days in jail in early 1994. The sentence arrived after two other high-profile incidents. In October of 1993, when he was charged with shooting two off-duty police officers in Atlanta. The charges were dismissed, but the following month, he and two members of his entourage were charged with sexually abusing a female fan. In 1994, he was found guilty of sexual assault. The day after the verdict was announced, he was shot by a pair of muggers while he was in the lobby of a New York City recordings studio. Shakur was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison on February 7, 1995.

Later that month, Shakur began serving his sentence. He was in jail when his third album, Me Against the World, was released in March. The record entered the charts at number one, making 2Pac the first artist to enjoy a number one record while serving a prison sentence. While he was in prison, he accused the Notorious B.I.G., Puffy Combs, Andre Harrell, and his own close friend Randy "Stretch" Walker of orchestrating his New York shooting. Shakur only served eight months of his sentence, as Suge Knight, the president of Death Row Records, arranged for parole and posted a 1.4 million dollar bond for the rapper. By the end of the year, 2Pac was out of prison and working on his debut for Death Row. On November 30, 1995 -- the one-year anniversary of the New York shooting -- Walker was killed in a gangland-styled murder in Queens.

2Pac's Death Row debut, All Eyez on Me, was the first double disc of original material in hip-hop history. It debuted at number one upon its February release, and would be certified quintuple platinum by the fall. Although he had a hit record and, with the Dr. Dre duet "California Love," a massive single on his hands, Shakur was beginning to tire of hip-hop and started to concentrate on acting. During the summer of 1996, he completed two films, the thriller Bullet and the dark comedy Gridlock'd, which also starred Tim Roth. He also made some recordings for Death Row, which was quickly disintegrating without Dre as the house producer, and as Knight became heavily involved in illegal activities.

At the time of his murder in September 1996, there were indications that Shakur was considering leaving Death Row, and maybe even rap, behind. None of those theories can ever be confirmed, just as the reasons behind his shooting remain mysterious. Shakur was shot on the Las Vegas strip as he was riding in the passenger seat of Knight's car. They had just seen the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight at the MGM Grand, and as they were leaving the hotel, 2Pac got into a fight with an unnamed young black man. It has been suggested that this was the cause of the drive-by shooting, and it has also been suggested that Knight's ties to the mob and to gangs were the reason; another theory is that the Notorious B.I.G. arranged the shooting as retaliation for 2Pac's comments that he slept with Biggie's wife, Faith Evans. Either way, Shakur was shot four times and was admitted to University of Nevada Medical Center. Six days later, he died from his wounds.

Hundreds of mourners appeared at the hospital upon news of his death, and the entire entertainment industry mourned his passing, especially since there were no leads in the case. Many believed his death would end the much-hyped East Coast/West Coast hip-hop rivalry and decrease black-on-black violence. Sadly, six months after his death, the Notorious B.I.G. was murdered under similar circumstances. As Shakur's notoriety only increased in the wake of his death, a series of posthumous releases followed, among them Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (issued under the alias Makaveli in 1996), R U Still Down? Profile:	At the start in 1980 the band contained three members, Eric McClinton, Meli'sa Morgan and Alyson Williams, all vocalists that were picked and employed by Jacques Fred Petrus in New York that gave them a name associated to the fashion business. They had all an interesting musical background. Eric had earlier worked as a vocalist with "The Mike Theodore orchestra" in 79 and Meli'sa as a vocalist on different "Kleeer" albums and on "A shade of love's" funky album in 82. Alyson, a daughter of the Jazz bandleader and trumpet player Bobby Booker, had done some background work as vocalist on several albums by the awesome band "Unlimited touch" before joining the group. In 1983 Meli'sa Morgan left the group for a successful solo career. Jazz vocalist Marcella Allen replaced her.

A mixed (male/female) trio that was the brainchild of Guadeloupe-born producer Jacques Fred Petrus, who moved to Bologna with dreams of becoming the Gamble & Huff of Italy; (while that didn't occur), he did produce noted disco albums by the B.B.&Q. Band, Change, the Ritchie Family, High Fashion, and others.

Petrus molded High Fashion (New Yorkers Alyson Williams, Me'lisa Morgan, and Eric McClinton) after Chic. Williams and Morgan first met in 1977 when both competed in Hal Jackson's Talented Teen International Scholarship Competition created for young women around the world 13 to 17 years old to display their intelligence and talent while networking with peers and competing for scholarships.

High Fashion debuted on Capitol Records in 1982 with Feelin' Lucky. It spawned one little disco hit, "Feeling Lucky Lately." A second LP, Make Up Your Mind, dropped in 1983; sales were embarrassing, Morgan booked, and by 1985, High Fashion disbanded.

A remake of Prince's "Do Me Baby" earned Morgan a number one R&B hit in 1985 for Capitol; she notched two more Top Ten R&B singles: "Do You Still Love Me?" and "If You Can Do It: I Can Too" before moving on to Arista Records in 1987 and hitting with a duet with Kashif ("Love Changes") that reached the number two spot (R&B). After Arista, she went with Pendulum Records.

Williams, the daughter of bandleader/trumpeter Bobby Booker, joined the Affair after High Fashion; before High Fashion, she was a sought-after session vocalist and worked on a long list of projects. A Def Jam single in 1987 began a solo career that ran out of gas in the late '90s. On Def Jam, in addition to solo work, she paired with Chuck Stanley ("Make You Mine Tonight") and Oran "Juice" Jones on "How to Love Again."

McClinton, whose masculine vocals accented High Fashion's sound, has been the least-active of the trio. He contributed backing vocals to Petrus' sessions, including the B.B.&Q. Band's She's a Woman LP. Beginning in the mid- to late '90s, Peter Rauhofer began garnering acclaim, attention, and controversy as Club 69, a moniker he used for his rather suggestive style of house music. By the end of the '90s, though, Rauhofer had expanded his reach in the stateside dance community. He not only had a successful label to call his own, Star 69, but also a thriving DJ reputation. If fact, Rauhofer became so reputed within the house scene that he began getting offers to remix the work of dance-pop's biggest names. For example, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Depeche Mode are just a few of the more popular artists who asked Rauhofer to give their music his trademark dancefloor treatment. Rauhofer's remixing eventually scored him a Grammy for Remixer of the Year, making him one of the few producer/DJs to crossover to the pop mainstream while still remaining an underground favorite.

Long before Rauhofer became one of New York's finest, he spent his youth in Vienna, Austria, his hometown. He first began getting acquainted with music while working at a small record store that stocked imports. By the early '80s, he had become a DJ and was regularly spinning at clubs around town. Next came a stint as the international A&R director for GIG Records, a small Austrian record label. This job provided him with plenty of industry experience and success eventually came his way, most notably when a production of his, "Let Me Be Your Underwear," released under the name Club 69, became a breakthrough hit in the U.S. This song set the stage for the debut Club 69 full-length, Adults Only. Soon Rauhofer was splitting his time between Austria and the States.

By the late '90s, Rauhofer had expanded his reach beyond Club 69, recording under other names such as House Heroes ("Magic Orgasm") and Size Queen ("Pimps, Pumps & Pushers"), and started his own label, Star 69. In 1997 came his second Club 69 full-length, Style, which became a cult favorite and a Billboard success, partly thanks to the success of "Drama." By the end of the decade, he had become a coveted remixer, getting assignments from such big names as Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, and Cher, among others. His remixing duties ultimately culminated in a Grammy for Remixer of the Year. It wasn't just his remixing work that was winning Rauhofer acclaim, though. Star 69 had blossomed into an in-demand label as progressive house became the trendy sound of early 2000. Rauhofer also became a superstar DJ, spinning at a number of New York's biggest clubs like the Limelight, in addition to nationally distributed mix albums like his entry in the Essential Mix series. Peter Lacey emerged at the end of the millennium from the shadows of years of session work on the British scene with a sound so melodically rich and sophisticated that he earned inevitable comparisons to legends from the golden era of pop music -- Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach in particular. Although such comparisons are never fair and often misleading, Lacey certainly earned the praise and distinction bestowed upon his music, and although he was beholden to melodic innovations from two and a half decades before he emerged as a solo performer, his music stands solidly on its own merits, extending the melodic tradition of his forebears rather than strictly imitating it.

Peter James Lacey (b. January 4, 1966) grew up in Brighton, Sussex, England, where he was early on exposed to church music, not to mention the music from his brother's late-'60s/early-'70s record collection. Countrymen the Beatles were an obvious favorite, but the music of the Beach Boys and Burt Bacharach also held considerable sway on the young lad. By his early teens, Lacey had begun performing in church and was already writing his own songs, many of which he would perform during services. The music changed appropriately when his performing moved to the church hall, and his itch for more popular forms of music began to surface. He played throughout his teenage years in every kind of band, from folk to heavy metal to funk, earning his musical education and becoming proficient in the process on keyboards, guitars, and drums. The constant stream of amateur bands led directly to steady work in various professional or semi-professional outfits, sometimes in the "outer darkness of cabaret." That, in turn, led to some session work in local Sussex studios, and Lacey eventually became a full-time professional session musician, partly satiating his eclectic tastes and musical range. He spent most of the 1990s working on numerous recordings for both up-and-coming artists and established ones (Clifford T. Ward, for instance) as well as bread-and-butter projects for BBC television and radio.

By the late '90s, Lacey decided in earnest to begin his solo career. While still maintaining a session work schedule, he spent any spare time that he had recording his own music on his own home portastudio, where he was free from time and financial constraints imposed by studios and record labels. Playing most of the instruments himself, he took two years to conceptualize and record his songs -- essentially created in succession as a thematic whole -- and the result was the sensational BEAM! The album indeed bears the melodic stamp of '60s pop, but it is far more than that narrow description implies: an enveloping, idyllic personal statement with elements of new age and new Romantic musics in addition to its obvious hooks. The music soon caught the ear of David Paramor, who had worked as a record producer at EMI in the 1960s. Although Lacey had intended them as demos, Paramor was so taken by the songs and their continuation of the chamber pop legacy that he immediately released BEAM! on his own independent label, RP Media. Within two months' time, the album had almost impossibly created a sizable buzz on both sides of the Atlantic by word-of-mouth, grass-roots effort alone and with little official publicity, earning champions in fans of the Beach Boys' art rock period, lovers of sophisticated pop, and music critics alike. With her long blond hair, wrap-around shades, and style tips taken straight from Debbie Harry, Concetta Kirshner would seem the least likely person to make her name in the world of alternative hip-hop, where authenticity -- especially in Kirshner's native New York City -- means nearly as much as the music. Nevertheless, in 1994, with dreams of giving the music world something innovative, Kirshner named herself Princess Superstar and made her first demo, armed only with a four-track and two tape decks. The demo was called Mitch Better Get My Bunny, a play on words from a popular urban catch phrase (and a rap song by AMG) at the time. The response to demo was immediate and gained a write up in CMJ magazine's "Futures" section that described Princess Superstar's eclectic mixture of hip-hop, punk rock, and outrageous humor. She signed with 5th Beetle Records and recruited a backup band consisting of Kirsten "Pro" Jansen on drums, Doug Pressman on bass, and Art "F" Lavis on guitar. 5th Beetle released Strictly Platinum in 1996. CMJ called the music "super sly hip-hop with jaw droppingly clever lyrics and inventive sampling;" A.P. went even further with its praise: "If you yearn for the days when a rap record was both exciting and innovative, as well as fun, Strictly Platinum has got your name scrawled across it...in neon peach lipstick." The rest of the press response was similarly overwhelming.

Following the buzz, Kirshner moved from her Clinton Street place to Avenue A, where she was christened "The Queen of Avenue A" by CMJ. Strictly Platinum gained momentum, even shooting to the number one spot on some college radio stations in New York and Los Angeles, while also gaining airplay throughout the U.S. and Canada. The band played live shows all over the East Coast and Canada. Strictly Platinum's "Theme Song" and "Flavis Special" were even used on NBC's NBA Roundup and MTV's Slam and Jam. Kirshner took steps toward musical autonomy by the end of 1996 by founding her own record label, the tongue-in-cheek-named A Big Rich Major Label, and vowing never to sign with a "real" major label again. She also assembled a new band: Ski Love Ski on bass, Mike Linn on drums, and DJ Science Center spinning records live. The group recorded the second Princess Superstar album, CEO, which was released in on October 31, 1997. The album again garnered national acclaim.

Following the album's release, Princess Superstar booked the Hostile Takeover Tour '98, a six-week tour through the U.S. and Canada, which included playing to a packed house at the South by Southwest music conference. Playing the Transmusicales de Rennes festival in France with Nashville Pussy followed in December of 1999, as did a mini-jaunt in London. Kirshner also spent the beginning of 1999 working on her third Princess Superstar album, Last of the Great 20th Century Composers, having again assembled a new backing band (Money Mike Linn on drums, DJ Cutless Supreme manning the turntables and playing guitar, and Walter Sipser holding down bass duties). Kirshner also chose to rename A Big Rich Major Label, opting instead for The Corrupt Conglomerate for the release of the third album. By the new millennium, Kirshner hooked up with Curtis Curtis for a fourth album. Princess Superstar Is, which was issued in early 2002, featured collaborations with Kool Keith, the X-Ecutioners' Mista Sinista, Beth Orton, and others. T-Bone Walker bio:

Modern electric blues guitar can be traced directly back to this Texas-born pioneer, who began amplifying his sumptuous lead lines for public consumption circa 1940 and thus initiated a revolution so total that its tremors are still being felt today.

Few major postwar blues guitarists come to mind that don't owe T-Bone Walker an unpayable debt of gratitude. B.B. King has long cited him as a primary influence, marveling at Walker's penchant for holding the body of his guitar outward while he played it. Gatemouth Brown, Pee Wee Crayton, Goree Carter, Pete Mayes, and a wealth of other prominent Texas-bred axemen came stylistically right out of Walker during the late '40s and early '50s. Walker's nephew, guitarist R.S. Rankin, went so far as to bill himself as T-Bone Walker, Jr. for a 1962 single on Dot, "Midnight Bells Are Ringing" (with his uncle's complete blessing, of course; the two had worked up a father-and-son-type act long before that).

Aaron Thibeault Walker was a product of the primordial Dallas blues scene. His stepfather, Marco Washington, stroked the bass fiddle with the Dallas String Band, and T-Bone followed his stepdad's example by learning the rudiments of every stringed instrument he could lay his talented hands on. One notable visitor to the band's jam sessions was the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson. During the early '20s, Walker led the sightless guitarist from bar to bar as the older man played for tips.

In 1929, Walker made his recording debut with a single 78 for Columbia, "Wichita Falls Blues"/"Trinity River Blues," billed as Oak Cliff T-Bone. Pianist Douglas Fernell was his musical partner for the disc. Walker was exposed to some pretty outstanding guitar talent during his formative years; besides Jefferson, Charlie Christian -- who would totally transform the role of the guitar in jazz with his electrified riffs much as Walker would with blues, was one of his playing partners circa 1933.

T-Bone Walker split the Southwest for Los Angeles during the mid-'30s, earning his keep with saxophonist Big Jim Wynn's band with his feet rather than his hands as a dancer. Popular bandleader Les Hite hired Walker as his vocalist in 1939. Walker sang "T-Bone Blues"with the Hite aggregation for Varsity Records in 1940, but didn't play guitar on the outing. It was about then, though, that his fascination with electrifying his axe bore fruit; he played L.A. clubs with his daring new toy after assembling his own combo, engaging in acrobatic stage moves -- splits, playing behind his back -- to further enliven his show.

Capitol Records was a fledgling Hollywood concern in 1942, when Walker signed on and cut "Mean Old World" and "I Got a Break Baby" with boogie master Freddie Slack hammering the 88s. This was the first sign of the T-Bone Walker that blues guitar aficionados know and love, his fluid, elegant riffs and mellow, burnished vocals setting a standard that all future blues guitarists would measure themselves by.

Chicago's Rhumboogie Club served as Walker's home away from home during a good portion of the war years. He even cut a few sides for the joint's house label in 1945 under the direction of pianist Marl Young. But after a solitary session that same year for Old Swingmaster that soon made its way on to another newly established logo, Mercury, Walker signed with L.A.-based Black & White Records in 1946 and proceeded to amass a stunning legacy.

The immortal "Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just as Bad)" was the product of a 1947 Black & White date with Teddy Buckner on trumpet and invaluable pianist Lloyd Glenn in the backing quintet. Many of Walker's best sides were smoky after-hours blues, though an occasional up-tempo entry -- "T-Bone Jumps Again," a storming instrumental from the same date, for example -- illustrated his nimble dexterity at faster speeds.

Walker recorded prolifically for Black & White until the close of 1947, waxing classics like the often-covered "T-Bone Shuffle" and "West Side Baby," though many of the sides came out on Capitol after the demise of Black & White. In 1950, Walker turned up on Imperial. His first date for the L.A. indie elicited the after-hours gem "Glamour Girl" and perhaps the penultimate jumping instrumental in his repertoire, "Strollin' With Bones" (Snake Sims' drum kit cracks like a whip behind Walker's impeccable licks).

Walker's 1950-54 Imperial stint was studded with more classics: "The Hustle Is On," "Cold Cold Feeling," "Blue Mood," "Vida Lee" (named for his wife), "Party Girl," and, from a 1952 New Orleans jaunt, "Railroad Station Blues," which was produced by Dave Bartholomew. Atlantic was T-Bone Walker's next stop in 1955; his first date for them was an unlikely but successful collaboration with a crew of Chicago mainstays (harpist Junior Wells, guitarist Jimmy Rogers, and bassist Ransom Knowling among them). Rogers found the experience especially useful; he later adapted Walker's "Why Not" as his own Chess hit "Walking by Myself." With a slightly more sympathetic L.A. band in staunch support, Walker cut two follow-up sessions for Atlantic in 1956-57. The latter date produced some amazing instrumentals ("Two Bones and a Pick," "Blues Rock," "Shufflin' the Blues") that saw him dueling it out with his nephew, jazzman Barney Kessel (Walker emerged victorious in every case).

Unfortunately, the remainder of Walker's discography isn't of the same sterling quality for the most part. As it had with so many of his peers from the postwar R&B era, rock's rise had made Walker's classy style an anachronism (at least during much of the 1960s). He journeyed overseas on the first American Folk Blues Festival in 1962, starring on the Lippmann & Rau-promoted bill across Europe with Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, and a host of other American luminaries. A 1964 45 for Modern and an obscure LP on Brunswick preceded a pair of BluesWay albums in 1967-68 that restored this seminal pioneer to American record shelves.

European tours often beckoned. A 1968 visit to Paris resulted in one of his best latter-day albums, I Want a Little Girl, for Black & Blue (and later issued stateside on Delmark). With expatriate tenor saxophonist Hal "Cornbread" Singer and Chicago drummer S.P. Leary picking up Walker's jazz-tinged style brilliantly, the guitarist glided through a stellar set list.

Good Feelin', a 1970 release on Polydor, won a Grammy for the guitarist, though it doesn't rank with his best efforts. Rapper Yung Joc (born Jasiel Robinson) learned about running his own business from his father who owned a hair-care products company. It was also his father who gave a teenage Yung Joc his first break, writing a jingle for the Revlon company. Joc decided right then that the hip-hop business was for him, but he needed time to find his own style. Watching the various hip-hop crews that grew out of his native Atlanta, Yung Joc didn't feel a kinship to any movement until the hard-edged T.I. came on the scene, although he was a big OutKast fan. Like T.I., Joc had begun rapping with the street in mind. To release this music, he formed his own company, Mastermind. He later hooked up with Russell "Block" Spencer and his Block Enterprises label and released the hard club track "It's Goin' Down" in early 2006. The track became an Atlanta favorite and eventually landed on the desk of Sean "Diddy" Combs. Spencer had already brought the group Boyz N da Hood to Diddy, and with Joc sounding like the very hot Young Jeezy and T.I., Diddy felt he had the right artist to take his fledgling Bad Boy South label to the top. Spencer inked a multimillion dollar deal with Bad Boy to sign Yung Joc and his label Mastermind along with Spencer's own Block Enterprises. Profile:	Benoit Franquet started out his musical career at the age of 5, starting out by learning to play the trumpet and guitar before later learning the art of composition that lead him to perform within a symphony orchestra, also playing in brass ensembles on regular occasion. As Benoit grew, so did his musical diversity and at the age of 15 he discovered rock music, channelling his musical energies into rock bands and by the age of 18 he had formed his first band, 'Dirty Slip' where he added song writing and to his fast growing repertoire, further band ventures seeing him play live and tour around his home country of Belgium. Not one to rest on his laurels, Benoit soon became influenced by the thriving techno scene being developed between clubs like Le Boccaccio and La Rocca, becoming influenced by the electronic sounds made famous at these venues, which pushed him into a direction utilising electronic sequencers. Ever curious, Benoit wanted to push this curiosity further and with long time friend Alain Bultot, they set up a professional studio where their group Ragged Life was formed. Several tracks were created, the most notable of which, 'I'll Be Right Here' becoming a massive anthem in the Belgium club scene and grabbing the attention of Sony Records Benelux, who realising the untapped potential that Benoit had, signed not only the track, but Benoit himself to a publishing deal, which quickly developed into a production role for many artists that Sony were dealing with. One of his first production jobs for Sony was in co-operation with an artist called Petra on the track 'Angel' which became an underground club anthem once more. Benoit was also in tune with the fast rising global dance scene and after discovering the sounds of DJs Sasha and John Digweed soon moved into a deeper direction under the name of Pole Folder. His first release, Apollo Vibes, was quickly signed to John Digweed's record label, Bedrock and since then two further singles have been released, in addition to the 'Moon In A Blue Sky EP' on Sunkissed Records. John Digweed, researching all of Benoit's work over the years soon signed Benoit up to an album deal, one of few artists to be offered a deal on the Bedrock imprint, and now the next chapter in the career of Benoit Franquet is about to unfold as he works towards creating an artist album, a venture that within the sometimes restrictive world of dance music looks set to rewrite the rules. Dinah Washington was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century -- beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics who still accuse her of selling out her art to commerce and bad taste. Her principal sin, apparently, was to cultivate a distinctive vocal style that was at home in all kinds of music, be it R&B, blues, jazz, middle of the road pop -- and she probably would have made a fine gospel or country singer had she the time. Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing. Washington's personal life was turbulent, with seven marriages behind her, and her interpretations showed it, for she displayed a tough, totally unsentimental, yet still gripping hold on the universal subject of lost love. She has had a huge influence on R&B and jazz singers who have followed in her wake, notably Nancy Wilson, Esther Phillips, and Diane Schuur, and her music is abundantly available nowadays via the huge seven-volume series The Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury.

Born Ruth Lee Jones, she moved to Chicago at age three and was raised in a world of gospel, playing the piano and directing her church choir. At 15, after winning an amateur contest at the Regal Theatre, she began performing in nightclubs as a pianist and singer, opening at the Garrick Bar in 1942. Talent manager Joe Glaser heard her there and recommended her to Lionel Hampton, who asked her to join his band. Hampton says that it was he who gave Ruth Jones the name Dinah Washington, although other sources claim it was Glaser or the manager of the Garrick Bar. In any case, she stayed with Hampton from 1943 to 1946 and made her recording debut for Keynote at the end of 1943 in a blues session organized by Leonard Feather with a sextet drawn from the Hampton band. With Feather's "Evil Gal Blues" as her first hit, the records took off, and by the time she left Hampton to go solo, Washington was already an R&B headliner. Signing with the young Mercury label, Washington produced an enviable string of Top Ten hits on the R&B charts from 1948 to 1955, singing blues, standards, novelties, pop covers, even Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." She also recorded many straight jazz sessions with big bands and small combos, most memorably with Clifford Brown on Dinah Jams but also with Cannonball Adderley, Clark Terry, Ben Webster, Wynton Kelly, and the young Joe Zawinul (who was her regular accompanist for a couple of years).

In 1959, Washington made a sudden breakthrough into the mainstream pop market with "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes," a revival of a Dorsey Brothers hit set to a Latin American bolero tune. For the rest of her career, she would concentrate on singing ballads backed by lush orchestrations for Mercury and Roulette, a formula similar to that of another R&B-based singer at that time, Ray Charles, and one that drew plenty of fire from critics even though her basic vocal approach had not changed one iota. Although her later records could be as banal as any easy listening dross of the period, there are gems to be found, like Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," which has a beautiful, bluesy Ernie Wilkins chart conducted by Quincy Jones. Struggling with a weight problem, Washington died of an accidental overdose of diet pills mixed with alcohol at the tragically early age of 39, still in peak voice, still singing the blues in an L.A. club only two weeks before the end. ~ Richard S.
